Bhatti was returning from Bhatinda, where he and the team of his film “Power Cut” (which releases today) had gone to worship a thermal energy plant to seek blessings for the movie.

Jaspal Bhatti was famous for doing such things. He once made a black cat run in front of the camera at the muhurat of one of his projects.

India’s most lovable satirist Jaspal Bhatti became famous for his TV series on Doordarshan – “Flop Show”, which was a smash hit and enjoys cult status.

Jaspal Bhatti decided to issue a “pirated copy” of his movie “Power Cut” (which stars his son Jagtap).

His logic was that since people would get a pirated version of the film anyhow, it might as well be him issuing and distributing it.

Most shows from that era can, I believe. Aa Bail Mujhe Maar, Ye Jo Hai zindagi, Nukkad, Mungeri Lal….India hadn’t opened up to the world and creators drew more on personal experiences and things they saw around them, and came up with ideas accordingly. What we have now is a true mongrel culture of filth.

This is the first time I’m hearing of Aa Bail Mujhe Maar. There was a pretty cool show called Wagle Ki Duniya.

yeah Anjan Srivastav, brilliant. Aa Bail.. had Amol Palekar so automatically good….there were a host of other lesser known ones like Sarah Jahan Humara with Girish Karnad who adopts a bunch of street urchins…, Indradhanush which fascinated me like little else growing up. There was some decent shit on even when Zee TV first made a splash but I don’t know when precisely the shit hit the fan and it all started rolling downhill.

          Here’s to simpler times.
