Music Review: Torchbearer – Death Meditations (2011)

A short piano intro opens the gates to a melodic black metal album fit for the ears of elitists. The flow of Death Meditations takes the subgenre back to its golden age, when the bands waving the melodic black metal flag were on the left hand path and hadn’t succumbed to greed or sloth. Torchbearer sweeps you away with its melodies, the songs refusing to settle in a couple of listens, the thrashy riffs gushing over the keyboard’s righteous presence, fuelled by blast beats and rich black metal vocals. Masterly guitar solos enter at occasions to make you sit up in attention before the riffing drags you back into the album. The songs are woven so intricately that all the sounds the instruments are making become one, and halfway through the album, you know Death Meditations merits replays. Torchbearer doesn’t take its name lightly, and offers a muscular melodic black metal release without a cube of cheese.
