Best Mumbai Restaurant 2020
Surprise, surprise! Since moving to Charkop a week ago, I’ve already checked out more than 30 (yeah, I can eat your house) stand-alone restaurants, and this little discovery in Kandivali West turned out to be the star of the lot.
Giriraj Khichdi Ghar is easy to miss even if you’re standing across the road, but all the carrot juice has opened my third eye and I spotted this tiny gem with it.
Unable to believe just how good their food is, I visited it seven times to see if it could consistently be that good, and damn right it is.
Authentic Gujarati cuisine, the sort you’d find in a traditional Ahmedabad/Surat household, and probably way better than your mom can cook it, Giriraj Khichdi Ghar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I’m not posting food pics or offering suggestions because every single item on the menu hits the bloody spot, and so hard that even the other Gujarati restaurants in the vicinity don’t come anywhere close to its level.
As a bonus, the people running the show are pleasantly affectionate, and it shows in their food and their service. Not only did they warmly answer all my pesky questions about how the food is cooked, whether a dish has sugar or jaggery, if they believe Salman Khan was driving the car that night, and other pointless posers, but they also let me sample pretty much everything on their menu as well as off it, and they have no idea who or what I am, or that I’m writing a review about them.
This is by far the best food I’ve had in five years; it’s wonderfully homely, which makes it an extreme rarity, which makes it delightfully fancy, and I’ll shoot a video for the channel (click here, bitch) early next year if I feel like eating cooked food then, and most likely I will.
